Editorial: Student section loses sight of purpose

The student section is traditionally one of the most important pillars of support for the school’s student body and organizations.

Over the course of this year, Penn-Trafford’s student section has played a big role in the school – both positively and negatively.

The group has been there cheering for our teams in many sporting events and has set an example for school spirit. Especially during the football season, there was always a great turnout and wave of support from students.

Unfortunately, there have been several incidents where the group did not demonstrate a good example of how a student section should act.

In particular, social media has been used negatively towards some of our own students and teams.

A student section member or leader should support all of PTHS’s clubs, sports teams and activities. There should be positive support regardless if it is in person or through social media.

Whether it is French club, Chess club, the football team or cheerleading, all groups deserve encouragement rather than scrutiny. Even if a member is not interested in a certain activity, they should still show respect or at least remain silent.

There should never be a time where our student section turns their back on our school, as it is their duty to uphold the standards of a good Penn-Trafford student section.

Under no circumstances should social media be used to bash our own students, organizations and activities. This betrays the purpose of a student section and ruins the trust between the section and the students they are supposed to support.

When it does make mistakes, whether big or small, the students should take responsibility and genuinely apologize. Being able to demonstrate this level of maturity is crucial.

If you do not want to support all of Penn-Trafford, you might as well go join Hempfield’s student section.
