Unified Bocce rolls to senior night victory

Before the Unified Bocce match between Penn-Trafford and Franklin Regional this Thursday, P-T assistant coach Nick Popovich had a straightforward plan for his team.

“Roll the ball, hit the pallina and get points,” Popovich said.

The two P-T teams followed these instructions exactly, earning them victories on senior night.

“Our senior night match was so much fun not only because both teams won all their games, but also because of all the fans, teachers, families and friends who came and supported us,” said two-year player Bella Matteo.

The nine honored seniors were divided between the two P-T teams. Team 1 won their matches 7-4 and 6-5. Team 2 won their matches 7-6 and 9-4.

Each team is comprised of special education students, known as “athletes,” and regular education students, considered “players.” Unified Bocce is a PIAA-regulated sport through the Special Olympics.

P-T began their program three years ago under coaches Miranda Frye, Colleen Jones and Popovich. Frye and Jones also teach in the special education department at the High School.

Popovich said he was going to miss the seniors, but his favorite part was teaching them to communicate with teamwork.

Before the match, each senior was escorted by their parents to the center of the court. Then, they met with their most impactful teacher over their four years.

“My favorite part about bocce has been how many close friendships I have formed and the lessons it has taught me,” Matteo said.
