Mario jumps out of the movie poster

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” brings the radiant world of the iconic video game to the big screen to fill its viewers with energy, charm and adventure. From its innovative animation style to its fast-paced storytelling, the film captures what many love about the franchise while also appealing to new viewers.

The story follows Mario as he travels across different galaxies along with Luigi, Peach and Yoshi to save Princess Rosalina from Bowser Jr., who seeks to use her power for a universe-destroying cannon to impress his imprisoned father, Bowser

Released April 1, 2026, the film features a star-studded voice cast, including returning actors Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach along with newcomer Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

Although the movie has its strengths, it also has its fair share of shortcomings.

One major topic of discussion among viewers, including myself, is the film’s storytelling. While the plot moves quickly and keeps the audience engaged, it can also feel rushed. This leaves little room for any character development, as key moments pass by so quickly that they lack the emotional impact they could have had if given more time to develop.

For example, halfway through the movie, Princess Peach discovers that she is Princess Rosalina’s younger sister after snooping through Rosalina’s belongings in her castle. This reveal, while surprising, feels rushed and lacks the development needed to make it emotionally meaningful.

Another highlight of the film is its animation. The 3D computer-generated animation, produced by Illumination, has a distinct style that charms viewers.

Since the release of the first “Super Mario Bros. Movie” in 2023, the character designs have stayed recognizable while also becoming more expressive and polished. The vibrant colors and detailed environments, such as the Fossil Falls and the Gateway Galaxy, help bring the galaxy setting to life, making the film visually appealing even when the storyline falls short.
Overall, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” delivers an entertaining and visually stunning appearance, even if it struggles with pacing and character development. While the faster-moving plot may leave some moments feeling underdeveloped, the film’s lively animation and adventurous spirit help make up for any shortcomings. Fans of the franchise will likely enjoy seeing the galaxy brought to life on to the screen, but those looking for a more emotionally driven story may find it lacking.

Despite its flaws, the movie succeeds in capturing the fun and excitement that defines the Mario universe.

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
