Local non-profit helps community prosper

Penn-Trafford is known for its local parks and recreational activities, in part thanks to Friends of PTARC, a local non-profit that has a goal to keep P-T outdoors.

Organizations described in section 501(c)(3) are commonly referred to as charitable organizations. Organizations described in section 501(c)(3), other than testing for public safety organizations, are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions in accordance with Code section 170.

Each year, they donate $3,000 in scholarships to PTHS student volunteers of the organization. They also donate thousands of dollars to local parks.

Most recently, they donated a $3,500 merry-go-round to Level Green elementary school. They also organize the Bushy Run 5k each year.

While parks and recreational activities are mostly thought to be for children,  Linda G Bires, executive director of Friends of PTARC, said she believes it’s helpful for everyone.

“I want them to be healthy and active, and recreation is a big part of that. Not just for young people but more and more I have learned that it is VERY important that Seniors stay active to stay healthy. I do my best to introduce new programs for all to attend, and applied for a grant that will include installation of an Outdoor Adult Fitness Pad here at Penn Township Municipal Park,” Bires explained.

Bires said she loves that she can make where she lives a better place. She stated that after having her children, she wanted to  make the world a better place for them as well.

While Friends of PTARC usually focus on parks and recreation, most recently they have been focusing on other things around P-T.

“Our focus these last few years has been to replace Playground equipment, support the Penn Township Ambulance Center and help Penn Borough build a combination Senior/Community Center. Friends of PTARC also sponsored several pre-school classes and programs keeping our youth active and the on-going Senior Strength and Stretch class which gets our 55+ people moving, all of which helps with mental wellness by socializing with friends,” explained Bires.

Friends of PTARC are always seeking volunteers to help make our community. Anyone interested in making a difference for their neighbors by participating in this organization can get in touch with me at lbires@penntwp.org or the office at 724.392.4555.
